In 1994 Konstantin Tachkin founded a unique private theatre to develop the traditions of Russian classical ballet that is capable of competing against the famous state theatres. The theatre’s home is a palace building in the centre of St. Petersburg, privately built in 1898 by the last  Russian Tsar Nicholas II.

The theatre’s repertoire includes world ballet masterpieces such as, “Giselle” (Premiered 31st December 1994), “Don Quixote” (Premiered 3rd March 1996), “Swan Lake” (Premiered 26th May 1997), “The Nutcracker” (Premiered 6th February 1999), “Gala concert of classical ballet” (Premiered 7th October 1999), “Diamonds” and “Sleeping Beauty”. All these ballets are performed according to the strict rules of classical ballet.

The ballet troupe dancers all talented and unique, and are certified specialist of the famous Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet. There are a total of 64 professional dancers who have studied with famous masters of Russian ballet art, some of them soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre.

The St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre has some gifted young dancers with exceptional classical technique and compelling stage presence including Dmitri Akulinin, Andrei Yakhnyuk, Andrei Stelmakhov, and ballerinas Sabina Yapparova and Olga Ovchinnikova. Prima ballerina Irina Kolesnikova is a world class dancer of magnetic power described as ‘inspirational’. She was also nominated Best Female Dancer in the 2005 National Dance Awards.
