St. Petersburg has an extensive public transport network, though the resources are over-stretched, and the system not immensely user-friendly. However, the metro system is great for downtown journeys and is a cost-effective and reliable way to travel medium to long distances. Trams, buses and trolleybuses are the best for shorter trips, or if you have any spare money you can use a taxi.If you are feeling more adventurous it is possible to rent a car, with or without a driver.
Metro - The metro system is a very popular transportation system in St. Petersburg, although not as extensive of lavish as Moscow's Metro. The network is relatively cheap, has 55 stations spread across four lines, and is open from around 05:45 to 00:30.
Trams - The trams system runs from 06:00 to around 01:00, covers and extensive area and is relatively inexpensive. To find a tram stop, just look for the letter "T" hanging above the road.
Buses - St Petersburg's bus network is relatively extensive and expanding. Buses that are distinguished by the letter "K" are commercial buses and are slightly more expensive than the inexpensive regular buses, but less crowded. To find a bus stop, look for a yellow sign with dark lettering and distinguished by the letter "A".
Trolleybuses - St Petersburg has quite an extensive network of trolleybuses, which are relatively inexpensive. To find a trolleybus stop, look for a yellow sign with dark lettering and distinguished by the letter "T". The trolleybus network runs between 06:00 and 01:00.
Taxis - St Petersburg has many taxis, especially along the main highways. They can usually be identified by a checkered bar on the rooftop and stop when flagged down. Be prepared to negotiate for a fare. If you can speak some Russian it is possible to order a cheaper taxi.
