The historic Astoria hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Russia, and was opened in 1912 following the construction under the project of architect Feodor Lidvalia in Tsar Nicholas II's reign. The opening of the hotel coincided with the celebrations for the 300th anniversary of the Romanov's House (December 1912). The Astoria Hotel is one of the most luxurious hotels in St. Petersburg, in one of the best downtown locations in the city. Under the management of Rocco Forte Hotels International, the Astoria Hotel has recently undergone a renovation program to introduce all the modern facilities of a world-class 5 star hotel, but still ensuring it keeps its charming turn-of-the-century Art Deco interiors. The Astoria Hotel manages to provide modern spacious rooms, fine dining and an excellent location that is just a short walk to many of St. petersburg's major downtown attractions.
Many famous people have stayed in the Astoria Hotel: American businessman Armand Hammer, the English writer Herbert Wells, Russian writers Michael Bulgakov and Maxim Bitter, poet Sergey Esenin, singer Feodor Shaljapin, Leonid Sobinov, the composer and singer Alexander Vertinsky, ballerina Anna Pavlova and Asidora Dunkan. After reconstruction in 1987-1991 the Astoria hotel accepted the ex-prime minister of Great Britain Margaret Thatcher, the state secretary of USA James Beker, members of the Imperial Romanov's family, well-known Faberzhe, the conductor and composer Mstislav Rostrapovich, sculptor Michael Shemjakin, opera singers Galina Vishnevskaia and Elena Obraztsova, Gin Lollobridzhida, Ted Terner and Jane Fonda.
