Originally St. Petersburg's main church, St Isaac's Cathedral was built between 1818 and 1858 by Auguste Montferrand, the French-born architect.
Its shining golden dome caovered with 100 kg of precious metal, dominates the skyline of St Petersburg at 102 meters. The facade of the cathedral is decorated with sculptures and red granite columns. Its construction cost 10 times more than that of the Hermitage / Winter Palace.
St Isaac's interior which can accomodate up to 14,000 standing worshippers is of exceptional beauty, adorned with paintings, icons and incredibly detailed mosaics. Inside the main altar is a large brightly coloured stained glass window of the "Resurrected Christ".
For spectacular views of St. Petersburg, we would advise you to climb the 300 steps to the colonnade around the domeof St Isaac's Cathedral .
